Your home should be a natural extension of your personal style. This is something I absolutely believe. Yes, it feels cliché but at the same time, it has the ring of truth. That said, I also believe that you are the bling. You are the shining light that makes the house the home that it has the potential to be. You almost have to bring something of yourself into your space, whether it’s a kitchen designed to match your cooking addiction or a library with shelves reaching to the ceiling filled with books, or even a wall of photos that have great meaning to you. Your home says YOU live there. The design is where we start to bring YOU out.

One of the great joys of design is working within the space to solve problems…for example, if a space is limited such as the under-side of a staircase in a basement family room, you can use cabinetry to make it a useable space! You can make it an extra closet space or some storage for the kids’ toys. You could also make it a cozy nook for some quiet alone-time with a good book. What if you have a small area where you like to entertain? How about a small bar with storage!

The kitchen is one of the most interesting and fun places to work within the realm of possibility. There are a thousand choices you’ll be making that I can think of just off the top of my head but in the end what you will have is a custom kitchen that no-one else will have that says that YOU were there and that this is YOUR space. As the kitchen is, usually, the heart-beat of the home where people congregate on a daily basis, it should be a well-organized place and one that you will use, happily, as long as you live there. Trends will come and go but you should have the kitchen that makes you happy just walking into the room.

I am biased, but I do believe that working with a designer is the best way to make use of the space within the budget you have. If you are honest about what you want and about what you can and can’t live without, it’s always possible to come out with a kitchen that will more than meet your needs and will shine in a thousand little ways.

Let’s not forget that cabinetry isn’t just for the kitchen! So you’ve always wanted a window seat, or you’d love to have a built-in entertainment center, or you want a mantel that will work with the design you have going in the rest of the house, it can all be done. If you want a floating vanity in the master bath or something in the bathroom that gives you more storage but still looks modern and chic, run with that! Let your designer pull something together that will make you swoon!

If you work with your designer and there is relatively easy communication, the process should be much simpler than just going it alone and hoping it turns out alright. Your designer can take care of all of the loose ends and help you make sure that all of those needs discussed in the early meetings have been met and nothing has been forgotten. This is a partnership – and the designer does not ever want you to dislike your space! Since it IS an extension of you; of who you are and the life you lead, they will want it to be a space that helps you shine. I can tell you from experience, it is one of the greatest joys our designers have, hearing from their clients that they love the final results and that a job has been well done. This is a labor of love for everyone on the design team or we wouldn’t be doing it.
